Good news for the North. That’s what Northwest Territories Premier Bob Mcleod thinks about the conditional approval of the Northern Gateway pipeline.
McLeod expects that while the pipeline will open up new markets for the country it could also mean opportunity in his region.
The Premier told CBC, “We’re still very bullish on the Canol Shale,” referring to the oil rich rock in the Sahtu region. He made his comments at the opening ceremony of the Petroleum Resources Division office in Inuvik.
The N.W.T office will be responsible for handing out oil and gas rights in the territory, a responsibility that used to rest with the federal government. Now the feds will oil look after who drills in the Beaufort Sea. McLeod is hoping that will change in the near future.
