Delays over Keystone XL leads to push for pipeline to the east-not Asia, Canada

July 3, 2014 by Rob Hislop Leave a Comment

TransCanada Corp. has been mired in political arguments in the US, stalling its proposed Keystone XL pipeline. So the Calgary company is looking at the east coast instead of going south.

Canadian oil sands producers are encouraged by the route which would be another option to get their product to market. One that would not need approval by the American government.

It’s not a guarantee the Energy East pipeline will get the go ahead in Canada. All you have to do is look at the delays Enbridge is encountering trying to build the Northern Gateway pipeline. Environmentalists, First Nations, BC politicians and others have been battling Enbridge and the governments of Alberta and Canada.

There will likely be another fight over Energy East, since that would become the longest pipeline in North America and would need to cross numerous waterways including the St Lawrence River.
