TransCanada is not going to build an oil export facility in Québec as part of its Energy East pipeline project.
“This decision is the result of the recommended change in status of the Beluga whales to endangered and ongoing discussions we have had with communities and key stakeholders,” said Russ Girling, TransCanada’s president and chief executive officer.
The $9.5 billion Energy East pipeline would run from the oil sands of Alberta to the Canadian East coast. Once there, the oil could be forwarded to nearby refineries or shipped via tanker to the larger Gulf Coast refining complex.
The company also announced it would delay the pipeline until 2020 instead of a planned in-service date of 2018.
