Longmount Colorado, a city of 25-thousand, is locked in a battle against the oil industry. The issue is fracking rights.
Located in the northern part of the state, its residents decided to ban hydraulic fracturing a couple of years back. The decision protect open wilderness spaces and a reservoir popular with fishermen.
The decision obviously wasn’t welcomed by the oil and gas companies working in the region and now they are mounting an offensive to overturn the ban. The industry, insists cities don’t have the power to impose a ban, that it is a state government issue. As a result of this argument three fracking prohibitions have been reversed
In New York it’s a different story. That State has moved in the direction of banning fracking statewide.
