When it comes to oil and gas spills Colorado is on the way to a record breaking year.
To date there have been 467 spills of varying sizes in the the state. The high was set last year at 575.
At a rate of two a day this year that number could be easily topped. But it’s not just the fact there are more spills, turns out oil companies aren’t always letting their neighbours know.
The American Petroleum Institute industry recently announced new standards encouraging companies to communicate more with communities. That isn’t always happening and sometimes the API says that’s governments fault.
As for government – the State says the high numbers simply reflect more drilling and how the new reporting requirements are working.
That may not be enough to ensure people have faith that either the government or oil industry is taking care of business.
