With the United States hitting highs of oil and natural gas production not seen for years, producers in Alberta are feeling the pinch. Their share of the market is slipping not just south of the border but in Canada as well.
One example is Nova Chemicals. The Calgary based company, which is owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is going to be getting ethane from North Dakota for use at its Joffre, Alberta plant.
Suncor Energy Inc. is also buying crude from the U.S. for use in its refinery in Montreal.
This shift is triggering safety concerns because of an increase in rail traffic, especially in the wake of the Lac Megantic explosion which killed 47 people and leveled much of the Quebec community.
